about

Do you ever think about how iconic but different elements have coexisted throughout time? It's something that we perhaps take for granted in the Internet Age; anything is accessible, a map of coincidence; everything is a neighborhood of known variables. Consider the guillotine; the last execution using this antiquated method occurred at roughly the same time as the premiere of Star Wars.

The verses on this track are a thunderstorm off the coast and the beat is the calm sea lapping at your ankles; it's the moon reflected in the water. You're hearing the thunder at the same time you are feeling the stillness of the night; but both are certainly happening. Simultaneously. They are together contributing to an environment, becoming parameters much in the way that Latrell James and Rain shape the two minutes and thirty-nine seconds of this song. It’s also worth noting this is the only track on the self-titled album that was created together in the same room. You can feel that in the pulse of the drums and the symmetry in the vocals and production constantly moving between urgency and patience. “.38 Special” becomes its fully realized self with contributions from Nick Phaneuf (Tan Vampires) on guitar and otherworldly guest vocals by Jared Evan.

You might hear this and initially feel a disparate nature to the proceedings; how can there be a lightning storm happening over there? How can a lightsaber and a guillotine both be ringing at once? By the time you can catalogue the moving parts at work, you'll see the balance of it all: both the hindsight wonder of beholding the historical calculus, as well as the precision and orchestration of ".38 Special."

lyrics

I woke up this morning
My life outta order but I’m feeling blessed
There’s money in everything
I watched a funeral home cash a check
I wish that time was working in reverse
I’m growing young to my death
I took a step off the steps
I took a step take a breath
I gotta exercise my demons
I put ‘em all on a treadmill
Somebody asked me what’s my paradise
I told ‘em laying in bed still
There’s blood on the leaves
There’s blood on your hands
Just don’t get blood on your sneaks
Cuz they tracing everything
I’m embracing for everything
Y’all should just follow my lead
I went from Rugrats and a cold soda
To a fear of the police might pull me over
And I’m fresh outta options
It’s etched in my conscience
They created a monster, they want a puppy now
I’m in need of somebody to hug me now
All my decisions are based off emotion
They way of fixing is drugging now
I can get Oxy’s for Jackson’s
I can get Xan’s for a Hamilton
So when I die from this overdose
Dress me up like Mr. Anderson
I hope it’s the one
Look to the sun
Hope that my life doesn’t end by a gun
I fear the world for my nephew
You gotta make ‘em respect you
Hope it’s the one
Look to the sun
You can’t just live your whole life on the run
So when that moment they test you
You show that 38 Special…
